"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee." — Isaiah 26:3
Beloved brethren, the world is an ocean of restless waters, and men are like ships tossed to and fro, with neither anchor nor haven. They chase the fleeting mirage of peace in the marketplace, in worldly honor, or in the cup of carnal pleasure. Yet their souls remain unstable, like the troubled sea which cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. But there is a peace—a divine, heavenly, everlasting peace—which the world knows not, neither can it give.
This peace is the heritage of the believer, the peaceful estate of the soul resting in the immutable promises of our covenant-keeping God.
The promises of God are not as the words of men, full of uncertainty and change. No, they are firmer than the mountains. Has He said, and shall He not do it? Has He spoken, and shall He not make it good? The promises of God are as unfailing as His own existence. To the anxious soul, they are wells in the desert, manna in the wilderness, and a pillow for every weary head.
How precious are these promises to the believer! Hear what the Spirit says:
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
“My grace is sufficient for thee.”
“Fear not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God.”
Here is peace—not in the absence of trial, but in the presence of the Lord.
The prophet speaks not of a mere passing comfort, but of perfect peace—a double peace, deep and lasting. And to whom is this given? To the one whose mind is stayed on Thee. Oh, what a blessed posture! Like a weary child leaning on his father, or a ship anchored to an immovable rock, so is the soul that leans all its weight upon the Almighty.
To stay the mind on God is to meditate on His truth, to rest in His character, to give every burden to Him. Not on self, not on feelings, not on circumstances, but on Him. Let the winds howl and the waves rise; the believer is safe whose heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
Notice the final clause: "because he trusteth in Thee." The strength of the One we trust in, secures our soul. Faith takes God at His word, lays hold of His promises, and walks upon the waters.
Doubt paralyzes, but faith sings in the night. Would you have peace? Then trust—trust wholly, trust now, trust always. Though all the lights of the earth be turned off, yet the star of God’s promise shall guide us through the night.
Dear brothers and sisters, walk through the valley and rest upon the Word. Climb the mountain, and lean upon the Rock. Let the Bible be your counsellor, and the Holy Ghost your Comforter.
Oh, that we would live as if we truly believed God's Word! Then would our souls be like a watered garden, and our peace as a river. Trust Him—He cannot lie. Rest in Him—He changes not. Rejoice in Him—for He is our peace.
Shalom!
